Myrrh
was so important as antiseptic in ancient times that it was mentioned in the Bible as one of the gifts to the infant Jesus from the three wise men. It was also a significant ingredient in the even Egyptian mummification process and was used to treat gangrene in the First World War. So Myrhh has a very long history of use and in more recent times has been proven to be a superb topical antiseptic especially for the teeth and gums.
Calendula, or Old English
marigold has no less an illustrious history as a potent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic plant and is one of Toria's favourite herbs for treating skin problems. Calendula has a broader spectrum of action than the trendy Tea Tree (attacks more bugs), one is less likely to be allergic to it (Tea Tree is fastest rising cause of contact dermatitis in UK) and it grows like a weed (so will never be endangered like Tea Tree now is). Oh, and it is native (naturalised by the Romans), highly decorative, makes a great companion plant for organic gardening and the petals can be used a s a substitute for Saffron.
